Daniel Tosh and I could be really good friends in real life. You don’t believe me?! Well, it’s true. Wanna know how I know that? Because he told me so. Well, me and 10,000 other people who attended last night’s show at the Honda Center in Anaheim, home to the Anaheim Ducks.
Charming as usual, Daniel covered topics ranging from abortion to 9/11, and somehow he was able to make them funny. How? Well, it’s his gift from God, or so he called it. I love that he shamelessly embraces his talent, good fortune, and newly acquired wealth. Because of his delivery, he is able to somehow make these claims and still leave you with a smile on your face. That definitely takes a special kind of skill.
So one of the highlights of last night’s show was when he talked about his fans and their claim that Tosh could be their friend in real life. One way to gauge this is by asking yourself one important question. He said, “If you have ever uttered the phrase, ‘There is nothing funny about _blank_’ (Fill in that blank with AIDS, abortion, cancer, 9/11, Hurricane Katrina…You get the point) then we could never be friends.” So ask yourself, could you find humor in these topics?
I can. And I did. Of all the topics he covered last night – racism, sexism, mental retardation, poverty, 3rd world countries, Mexicans, Canadians – there was not one bit that I found unfunny. And fine, my opinion could be a little biased. After all, I do love Tosh. He could do no wrong. But honestly, he has a way about him. And in a moment of sincerity and humility he admitted how “ridiculous” it was for him to be standing in front of such a large crowd, getting to do the thing he loves most, which is making people laugh. He thanked all of us fans for watching his show on Comedy Central and for coming out to support him on tour. He acknowledged that his fifteen minutes of fame would not be possible without us and for that, he is grateful. Then he joked that when it’s all over, “this is gonna go down in a real bad way.”
If you’re not already a fan, then I dare you to give Tosh a chance. However, if you are uptight, easily offended, and generally lacking a sense of humor, then this guy is not for you. And it’s ok cause he wouldn’t want to be friends with you anyway. And for that matter, neither would I. 😉
Thanks for reading and I hope your week is off to a great start!
